Shaytan's Beautification of Deeds: Misguidance and its Perils

Sheikh Faisal Ghazzawi
Masjid al-Haram, Makkah
April 03, 2026
The sermon discusses the concept of 'tazyeen al-amal' (beautification of deeds), distinguishing between divine beautification and the deceptive beautification by Shaytan. Shaytan makes evil deeds appear good and righteous, leading individuals astray, as illustrated by Quranic verses like 'those whose efforts have been wasted... while they thought that they were doing good work' (18:104) and 'Is he then to whom the evil of his conduct is made fair-seeming?' (35:8). Historical examples include Shaytan's temptation of Adam and Eve, his incitement of Quraish against Muslims, the Queen of Sheba's sun worship, and Pharaoh's tyranny. This deception occurs in two ways: making the ugly seem beautiful (e.g., killing children, 6:137) and making the beautiful seem ugly (e.g., Lot's people viewing purity as a fault, 27:56). The consequences of succumbing to this deception include preferring falsehood over truth, misguidance over guidance, and ultimately becoming an ally of Shaytan, which can lead to apostasy. Believers are urged to seek Allah's guidance and protection from such deceptions, recognizing the profound difference between those on Allah's path and those misled by Shaytan.
