The Praiseworthy and Blameworthy Forms of Joy in Islam

Sheikh Bandar Baleelah
Masjid al-Haram, Makkah
March 20, 2026
The sermon by Sheikh Bandar Baleelah explored the concept of 'joy' (farah) in Islam, distinguishing between its praiseworthy and blameworthy forms. Praiseworthy joy is rooted in gratitude for Allah's blessings, His mercy, and successful completion of worship, exemplified by Allah's own joy at a servant's repentance and the fasting person's dual joys at breaking fast and meeting their Lord. Conversely, blameworthy joy stems from arrogance, pride, or delight in disobedience and sin, which is condemned in the Quran. The Imam stressed that believers should find joy in Allah's bounty, His sacred texts, and fulfilling religious duties, particularly in completing the fasts and acts of worship during Ramadan. He urged the congregation to embrace this righteous joy, which includes celebrating Eid al-Fitr, as a form of devotion and thankfulness to Allah.
