The Virtue of Good Speech and Guarding the Tongue

Sheikh Khalid Al-Muhanna
Masjid an-Nabawi, Madinah
October 09, 2026
Sheikh Khalid Al-Muhanna focused his sermon on the vital importance of gentle speech and guarding the tongue, highlighting that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) possessed the most perfect character and always chose the kindest words. He cited the Quranic parable comparing a good word to a wholesome, fruitful tree with firm roots and branches reaching the sky, which represents the believer whose good deeds and speech continuously ascend to Allah. The Imam reminded the audience of the Prophet's (ﷺ) guidance to shield oneself from the Fire even with half a date, or failing that, with a kind word, and quoted the Quranic command to speak what is best to prevent Satan from sowing discord. Warning of the dangers of reckless speech, he referenced the prophetic warning that people are cast into Hell on their faces due to the harvests of their tongues, concluding with prayers for the Muslim ummah, the Saudi leadership, and the protection of Masjid al-Aqsa.
