The Virtue of Leaving What Doesn't Concern You

Sheikh Salah Al-Budair
Masjid an-Nabawi, Madinah
May 02, 2025
The sermon highlights leaving what doesn't concern oneself as a mark of strong faith and perfection, quoting the Prophet's saying that it is "from the excellence of a person's Islam." It clarifies that "what doesn't concern one" includes forbidden acts, doubtful matters, disliked actions, and excessive permissible things, which do not contribute to one's essential needs for this life or the hereafter. The Imam warns that meddling in others' affairs, excessive questioning, delving into private lives, and spreading rumors (qil wa qal) lead to misery, animosity, and loss of blessings. He advises believers to focus on their own shortcomings, seek knowledge for righteous action, and avoid engaging in useless talk (laghw) or any activity that neither benefits their faith nor their worldly well-being. This self-restraint brings peace, tranquility, and blessings.
